Women in Film and The Broken Hearted: A Video Interview - By Naomi Angel
To celebrate International Womení¢â‚¬â„¢s Day, Women in Film and Television International (WIFTI) organized a Short Film Showcase highlighting the work of women directors around the world. Eleven short films in total were screened in 15 cities around the world including: New York, Auckland, Washington, Atlanta, Denmark, and Toronto. Antoinette Karunaí¢â‚¬â„¢s film, The Broken Hearted, was one of the standouts.
The Broken Hearted, is a 11-minute short exploring a young womení¢â‚¬â„¢s journey to mend a broken heart. Rich in colour and mood, the film captures the emotions: the sadness, searching and ultimate hopefulness, of this young womení¢â‚¬â„¢s recovery. Without dialogue, the story is told by a cast of talented actors, stunning visuals and shadowy music.
Having received awards including First Prize at the 2004 edition of the Cours íƒ ©crire ton court! screenwriting competition and Best Original Screenplay at the Malibu International Film Festival, Antoinette Karuna has turned her sights to feature film-making. Karuna took the time to speak to Capitalmag shortly after the Toronto screening to discuss the film, the importance of the WIFTI Showcase, and her future plans.
