Rambling Robot: Music Editorial

Ití¢â‚¬â„¢s been a long time. A long time since the title í¢â‚¬Ëœeditor' was next to my name, a long time since the words í¢â‚¬Ëœcapitalí¢â‚¬â„¢ and í¢â‚¬Ëœhappeningí¢â‚¬â„¢ were next to each other. And a long time since this robot has rambled. A lot has happened in music since we put out our last issue almost two years ago (arguably the first free DVD magazine to be released). Britney was replaced by Paris, Johnny Cash and Syd Barrett died, and myspace, not TV or radio, is where fans look for musical inspiration.

This editorial was always a place for me to sound off about what I thought was good and bad with the popular and underground music scenes. Ií¢â‚¬â„¢d like to continue the tradition but have a proposal for you, the reader. If there is something posted you doní¢â‚¬â„¢t like, let us know. If you think weí¢â‚¬â„¢re missing out on something, again, let us know. And if you love or hate us, well you get the idea. If after all your requests you still arení¢â‚¬â„¢t being answered, then perhaps ití¢â‚¬â„¢s time for you to stop writing complaints and start writing about music. Ií¢â‚¬â„¢m open to posting your opinions. I certainly would rather post your insightful piece on why Dragon Force is the best thing to happen to metal than to post another í¢â‚¬Å“You should do thisí¢â‚¬ letter.

This is the portion of the ramble where I usually launch into what has been making us at Capital still believe music can make a difference in oneí¢â‚¬â„¢s life. This is the place where I write that the world is finally realizing the genius of Girltalkí¢â‚¬â„¢s wonderfully meshed together mashups. We brought out Girl Talk (Gregg Gillus) to the New Forms Festival two years ago to the shock and amazement of the audience. I guess some things take a while to become accepted. Speaking of amazing, The Social Registry label is putting out some shit-hot records these days. The huge popularity of Gang Gang Danceí¢â‚¬â„¢s wonderfully fucked musical noodling is proof that there is a god and a wonderfully creative one at that.

Hip-hop still never ceases to amaze me. Influential producer J Dilla managed to only put out one record while he was alive but since his death heí¢â‚¬â„¢s released two, with at least one more on the way. I doní¢â‚¬â„¢t want to bring Tupac and Biggy into the picture but is a post-living release schedule becoming a new trend? The West Coast Bay area is rockiní¢â‚¬â„¢ the hyphy sound while Lupe Fiasco is keeping dance floors tight on the East Coast. And whatí¢â‚¬â„¢s happened to instrumental hip-hop acts thinking they need MCs now? Someone should tell Dabrye, Prefuse, and Ammon Contact that they doní¢â‚¬â„¢t. If two for one is what youí¢â‚¬â„¢re looking for however, put those dollars and cents away for Alter the Boris/Sun o))) collaboration to appropriately be released on Halloween. Whatever it is ití¢â‚¬â„¢s sure to be scanners brain blowing loud.

But Ií¢â‚¬â„¢ve rambled long enough for now. I long for anotherí¢â‚¬â„¢s ramble so doní¢â‚¬â„¢t forget your duty readers. Only you can make Capital better. Or you can at least try.
